Music is everywhere. In our playlists, movies and even in our commercials. It makes us feel happy, sad, excited and relaxed. But does the music we listen to actually change how we see the world, or is it just something fun to enjoy? Let's dive into both sides of the question, and test it out myself.
Some studies suggest that music can change the way we perceive things. For example, research from the University Groningen found that listening to happy or sad music can affect how we interpret neutral faces, making them seem happier or sadder to us. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/04/110427101606.htm
Music has been shown to affect our emotions and even inspire change. According to Save the Music, music has the power to alter one's mood, change perceptions, and inspire change.
On the flip side, some people believe that music is purely entertainment. They argue that while a song may make us feel a certain way while it's playing, it doesn't have a lasting impact on how we view the world. For them, music is a way to have fun, relax or pass the time without deeper effects.
When you listen to music, have you ever noticed any long-term effects? Try reflecting on that the next time you play your favorite album. Does your personality or identity reflect your current favorite artist? Do you even believe music can influence you in that way? Conduct your own study and see what you discover!
To explore this theory further, I am doing a two-week experiment. Each week, I'll dive into the albums of a specific artist and ONLY that artist for one week. I will listen to their records daily, and document my experiences with myself, interacting with others and how I view my experiences that week. I won't include artists that I listen to constantly like Beyonce, or Alicia Keys because their music may already affect how I express emotion and inspiration, and even how I interact with others.
Looking forward to starting this experience, happy listening!
